According to my calendar, which says: Moharram, Islamic New Year 1424.
However I don't know what 'Moharram' means. I assume that it means 'New years day' or it's nearest islamic equivalent. Anyone care to comment..
Happy new year!

Drat, just noticed that Dr. Montague trout beat me to it.
Oh well, I'll point out in advance that it's the annual Cat Festival in Belgium tomorrow, should you be worried about missing that..
Happy new year!

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic year. Literally, it means 'forbidden' or 'sacred'.

Seems a strange translation for the name of a month..
Do you happen to have a list of the other months and the translations thereof?
Happy new year!

Just like the Western calendar, Islamic months are a mixed bunch, not all have known meanings, and I think most if not all of the names predate Islam. I can reel off the names of the months, but I would have to check elsewhere for any meanings:
Muharram
Safar
Rabi' al-Awwal (lit. Rabi' "The First")
Rabi' al-Akhir (lit. Rabi' "The Last)
Jumada al-Ula (lit. Jumada "The First")
Jumada al-Akhirah (lit. Jumada "The Last")
Rajab (named after Mudar tribe, I recall - strange!)
Sha'ban
Ramadan
Shawwal
Dhu al-Qa'dah
Dhu al-Hijjah (month of Hajj)
Key: Complain about this post
