Well, actually, it has everything to do with religion.
What are transubstantiation and immaculate conception but um, magic.

Just as much of "Christian" pseudo mythology is based on the elder faiths, modern neo-paganist wannabes often base their new age faiths on the "Christian" reaction to what they almost remembered.
This is not necessarily a bad thing, but I have met some young Celtic sorts who have had their heads filled with "druid" dreck by their parents and grandparents to the point where thought is more to be feared than welcomed.
