A Conversation for Great Comedy Acts

Called the contempory answer to Morcambe & Wise by some, but they have brought so much more to the world of commedy than that association give credit for. From Vic Reeves Big Night Out right up to Shooting Stars the comedic stylings of Reeves and Mortimer have at once both baffled and amused the British public.

Who can forget such priceless gems as:

-Pat Wright & Dave Arrowsmith
-The Man with the Stick
-Slade in Residence
-Oxton's Body Crop
-The Homebrew Duck
-Lickey-Kickey the Security Dog
-The fantastic "Coffee Break" & "Pancake Day" albums by folk duo Mulligan & O'Haire

The list goes on and on.

Eranu...Uvavu!

The "Action Man & Dr X" sketch on Shooting Stars was one of the funniest things I have ever seen...
"Pig Extreme"... Brilliant!

Damn it, I missed that one!

The sketches were the best part of Shooting Stars, without question. I can fondly recall the Addams Family sketch with George Daws as Uncle Fester.

My favorite moments from the last series were the boyband sketch and the Carry On parody. The sight of Wil Self dressed as Bernard Breslaw and uttering the line: "Sid" every two seconds was priceless.

Remember the one where (then 50's-throwback) Mark Lamarr sang "Firestarter" by the Prodigy?
Very very silly indeed.
But not nearly as odd as Mulligan and O'hare...

My rose has left me
I'm in a mood
She's gone to Kenya
With the bloke from Allied Carpets
She wasn't immunised
THAT'S A LEGAL REQUIREMENT
She's become increasingly slapdash
Since we bought that new hearthrug

Absolute stark raving genius.

Or sample the delights of:

Hotdogs for sale!
Hotdogs for sale!
Where, where?
Over here...by the beefburgers

Or:

I am here
In a tree
My friend can you see me?

No my friend
I cannot see you
for something else obscures my view
Why, it Gerrard Depadieu

And who can forget their haunting instrumental version of "Another Day in Paradise."

The day the donkey derby came to town
People came to see from all around
We never got to see who won the race
'Cos the super group The Who came down from the moon and rubbed tart and lemon in our face

A true classic!

Almost as good as Neil Morrissey as Ozzie Osborne:

"Alright Slade?!?"

"Alright, Ozzie!...War Pigs!"

The most surreal moment on British Television ever occurred in "The Smell Of Reeves and Mortimer", with the song:
Don't slip on loose muesli!
Don't drink and sleep on the street!
Beware, Clergy on a clifftop!
Don't let your children run free!

Geoff Taylor - Gullible Chump

Vic 'n' Bob got very tired, very quickly. Shooting Stars was originally a funny parody of panel shows, but it's now become an indulgent parody of itself. It's like "They think it's all over", another one-joke puppy that's long past its sell-by date.

Ten years from now, people will say "Reeves & Mortimer - who?" They're not in the same league as some of the other guys mentioned elswhere on this discussion.

I still find Vic & Bob funny due to the fact that they were prepared to what they wanted and push a surreal brand of comedy in an era where smut and innuendo were the watchword of tv comedy.

Long live Tom Fun.

Reeves & Mortimer were, a lot of fun.

They also do fantastic impersonations. My favourite has to be Vic as Bob Dylan: "Plums man. Two juicy Plums.".

Or Vic as Boit Reynolds, drinking vegetable oil and vowing that there "ain't no way" he's gonna leave a poisoned plum on the ground in the forest where a young deer could eat it.

I have bad memory for Mulligan & O'Haires' lyrics due to the fact that they've only appeared on the series. I just remember the sight of a rather large gentleman dressed up as a character from a Dumas novel and looking all jovial and gallic (though the two don't traditionally go together).
