A Conversation for Time - Concepts and Perceptions

Very good article. I see Jim Lynn liked it too. You successfully captured the fickleness and uncertainty of time and its subjectivity in a very engaging and inviting way. Admittedly I have a bias regarding the subject. I personally don't believe time really exists. We use it as human beings in order to explain our rather linear existence. It's a form of measurement. Nothing more. Time is not something we can touch or sense. We just accept it as given in much the same way mankind centuries before accepted that the world was flat or that the Earth was the center of the universe.

I'm assuming someday we will learn a better way to understand reality and our place in it, just as we no longer believe the moon is made out of green cheese. However, until then, it's a lot of fun to read time travel stories and imagine what it would be like to travel back in time and all that.

You can't really travel back in time because you can't travel in something that is not there, but one can dream. =)

I agree with you Zach, onthe point that Time is really somethign we impose on ourselves, to define
our one way, one track life. But you must admit, I don't think anyone, anywhere would quite be able
to cope with the simultaneous happening of every event in one's life, as would result from the lack
of the time-filter in our perception.
What an interesting thought.
If we percieved everythign at once, wouldn't seeing the outcome of our decisions, influence the
actual making of our own decisions, in doing so, wouldn't that enable everyone to live their lives
to their own perfect specifications. Somewhat like Reverse-Temporal Engineering.
Wow.
I don't know about anyone else, but I'm really impressed with that notion.

Thanks for your postings - and I, too, agree - I think that we are so obsessed with measuring and using "time" that we sometimes forget to just get on with experiencing whatever it is we ARE living in.
I am absolutely knocked out that my first submission "failed to be rejected" smiley - smiley Yipppeeee!!!!

I'm sorry - I just CAN'T resist any longer (hee hee)!!!

"TIME IS AN ILLUSION" - saith the great DNA via Ford Prefect. Feisor, you are going to get absolutely disgusted at the amount of praise I keep heaping at your feet - SUPERB page, I've already contributed my two shiny new pence in one of the other fora for this page so I shall skedaddle! Keep 'em coming!

Hehe I like the page too...

But wasn't it "Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so." - more complete and poetic that way. I'm not sure whether it means you can eat lunch when you feel like it or when it looks like a good idea... but either way sounds good.

Lunch is an illusion?

Don't tell the Powers That Be that lunch is an illusion or they'll never come back to edit our pages!!

If you're impressed at that notion, think on this: provided you believe in an omniscient being that created the universe (Christians call Him Jehovah, the Jews call him Yahweh, Muslims call him Allah I think, but he could just as well be the Great Arkleseizure for all we know) this will really roast your biscuit.

That whole deal you described where time is disregarded and everything is known at the same time at the risk of such knowledge affecting one's actions and all that? God goes through that all the time. He's cool with it. To him that's nuthin'. It probably gives him a headache having to think DOWN to our level. Where we still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea and all that.

If you don't believe in an omniscient being (or beingS for that matter) well you just missed out on a real hoopy mindbender. sorry! =)
