i recall being told some years ago that the original music, or some official version of it made later, actually had a name, 'between the lines'. is this correct?
and while i am here i would just like to say that the original music was,and is, sensational. i happen to think it was one of the cleverest pieces of music of the 20th century. i would be interested to know what is available from the 3 originators; Ron Grainer, Delia Derbyshire and Dick Mills.
my kids love the latest theme and the snares kick it along nicely, but all the versions between were dilutions i think.

I've never heard it called that - as it was written specifically for the show, and was only ever published as the 'Doctor Who theme', I'm not sure if this could be right. I can ask around though...

when i say i 'recall being told', i didn't mean personally. before an interview with a touring colin baker on local radio here a year or three back, the dr who theme was played and at the conclusion the announcer called it 'between the lines; the dr who theme'. baker said 'i didn't know it had a name' and the announcer said that was the name that came with the original recording. i have no idea what format that would have been or when. but it was the original or one of the very early versions.
perhaps there has been some (understandable) loss of institutional memory when it comes to the now, very old, programme.

Ah.
The announcer got it wrong. The music he was playing appeared on an album of BBC theme tunes called 'Between the Lines' (the title track being the theme tune to a BBC cop show on at the time).
Easy mistake to make, but a mistake nonetheless
