Diner slang as torture

My uncle Mo used to own a diner on the campus of Wayne State University, in downtown (or nearly so) Detroit. He used to come over to the house and ask for meals using slang, and drive my mother nuts!

Until she asked a neighbor of ours to give her some of *his* foodspeak from a texas rib joint he used to own... smiley - winkeye

Nice smiley - biggrin

I work at a restaurant (sort of), and I'm pretty sure that most of the folks in the kitchen would go smiley - huh if I tried any of this on them.

Probably the waiters too.

That's a shame...I can't remember too much of the lingo my uncle used, and I wish I did. It was colorful, and fun, when my mother kept trying to figure out what he wanted. Saturday lunches could be hilarious!

I'm afraid the phrase "sh*t on a shingle" would be eerily appropriate at McD's. smiley - ermsmiley - laugh

Y'know, next time I go in on my day off and have something to eat I'm going to try some diner slang on the waiters. I think we have enough things on the menu that I could work some in.

Don't ask me! I'm afraid the only slang I remember is my FIL's favorite meal -- S**t on a shingle -- which was from the Army. smiley - laugh
