A Conversation for American Diner Slang

American Diner Slang

coldwind

What a great site -- I found it looking for a soda fountain definition for the term "red mud".

A few terms you might want to add:

Sinkers -- Doughnuts, partly because they tend to be dunked in a cup of coffee, but also because the cake variety can resemble the old lead weights squeezed onto fishing lines -- and their consistency is frequently heavy enough to sink to the bottom of anything.

Owl Wagon -- A diner that's open all night (check out the great Preston Sturges film "Sullivan's Travels").

Pittsburgh Rare is known in some parts of the States as Black and Blue -- presumably because of that cool color that extremely rare meat has.

A bottle and a cold bird -- Not exactly diner slang, George Brent says this to his girl in the film "42nd Street". I have heard it was a way that theatrical people would order a hamburger and a cup of coffee. I would gladly learn more, if anyone out there knows.

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

Glad you liked it smiley - ok

You'll find 'sinkers and suds' - doughnuts and coffee - in the list, but I hadn't thought of the fishing weight reference smiley - biggrin

'Owl wagon' - I like that one smiley - ok
