This week's title is Dogs and Cats Living Together. Clockwise from upper left: title, an oil rig in the middle of the icy sea in northern Scotland, a red fire hydrant in Hong Kong, a snowy path with frost-covered trees, a black-and-white cat, head-and-shoulders profile, looking smug, a brown Carolina dog curled up in his dog bed with holiday wrapping paper for a cover, a Gheorgheniplex cartoon showing our heroes watching a Youtube video from the 1800s of a snowball fight, a water bird in water, from behind, two smug-looking kittens in the dog's bed, and a brilliant Cypriot sunset with flying seagulls.

Some wild and stray mid-winter thoughts appear in this week's issue. We have rare finds like Willem's Discokeryx (that's a real word!), and Robbie Stamp proves he was paying attention to the discourse by sending us visual proof of fire hydrants in Hong Kong.

We have a fiction free-for-all. This is partly due to inventiveness on the part of FWR and me, and partly due to the laziness of the rest of you. Send more pictures, get less prose. You know how this works by now. Meanwhile, Paulh shares limericks, as well, and historical stories turn up from the archives, so you will definitely be entertained for your fireside reading, which you are doing a lot of because it is snowing everywhere except where Willem is, where it is raining.

You WILL be educated. I tell you what an 'escutcheon' is when it's in a cow barn. Paigetheoracle tells you who Tom Morris was. The Hoggett cats and dogs show up to tell you about the indoor feud over Scrappy's new bed. Our video tries to make up for the lack of bird photos this week by taking you on an ornithological tour of 2024, courtesy of the h2g2 Post archives.

Humour, cinema, a quiz. The usual. Please read, share, comment, send more Stuff so you don't have to read so much didactic fiction from me.

Next week: a weather extravaganza you won't want to miss. (There will be snow. And sheep.)

Stay warm/dry. Stay safe. Stay positive: don't read the news.

Quote of the Week:
Walking with wolves this morning. Last night's fresh snow revealed activity in and around the subdivision. They walked down the trail across the road from my house, and all through the forest. I even found a spot where the whole pack met up for a while. It's nice to know they're there.
