A Conversation for The American Goldfinch: Wild Canary in Your Backyard
Goldfinches used to visit my chicory plant

Leave it to me to champion the cause of a scraggly, invasive weed solely because I adore the powder-blue blossoms it puts forth every morning. The trailer lot I livedo n until 2005 had a generous-sized lawn, and I studiously allowed blue chicory to grow in a clump that I could see from the window next to my computer.
July was a wonderful month, as (1.) the chicory bloomed heavily then, and (2.) the goldfinches would perch on the chicory's branches --sometimes as many as three birds at a time.
The lot I live on now hasn't got much chicory, but the guide entry mentions milkweed, which I have been cultivating for two years. Hopefully it will bloom and produce pods this year. I also have swamp milkweed, which produced pods last year. I don't know if goldfinches could have used them.
Goldfinches love to eat Coneflower seeds.
God, but, but they are beautiful birds!
