Blue swallowtail coat? How elegant!

I've looked up swallowtail coats from the early 19th Century. I realize that I used to own one -- it was required concert wear for a prestigious chorus I once sang with (I won't brag by saying which one, as I was suddenly not good enough for them by the time I was 33).

When I get nostalgic for those days, I imagine that I'm Fred Astaire in "Top Hat".

I don't want to downplay Burns's gumption. Imagine throwing confederate soldiers in jail -- or at least trying to. And wearing a tailcoat to war. smiley - laugh A General might, but Burns wasn't even an official soldier.
