And All Manner of Things Shall Be Well
...al shal be wel, and al shal be wel, and al manner of thyng shal be wele.
So said Julian of Norwich. Her words come back to reassure us when we feel the world pressing in on us. This song is 'It Is Well with My Soul'. The words are by Horatio Spofford, a businessman who went through some tough times. Spofford's two-year-old son died suddenly. Then the Chicago Fire burned up a lot of his property. The 1873 recession hit his business hard, so he stayed behind to deal with things while his wife and four daughters travelled to Europe on the SS Ville du Havre. The ship sank. Only his wife survived.
On the way to Europe, Spofford's ship passed the spot where the Ville du Havre went down. He wrote these words, and a musician named Philip Bliss wrote the tune. A lot of people over the years have found the song comforting. The arrangement is by Cindy Berry.
