To be honest, I agree with teddy Roosevelt about Cubism. Had Cubism had much potential, hopefully Picasso et al would have revealed it by working in the genre for a longer time. But they didn't.
Roosevelt's insights about the Lascaux cave paintings were on the mark, too. If one tries to go back to much earlier art and reshape it for a more modern world, that's fine. But shouldn't there be a goal of moving beyond the original? What Roosevelt seems to be saying is that not much was done to bring out what earlier artists had been unable to.
