Ponder Poetry
I've been enjoying the poetry in h2g2 recently, whether it was recommended by or written by h2g2ers, but each time I read an excellent piece it caused me to ponder poetry itself. I wouldn't particularly call myself a fan of poetry as my reactions to it are mixed - some poems I struggle to read and don't really understand. However, other poems leap out at me somehow, as they encapsulate deep and meaningful concepts delicately within few words...
One such poem is 'My Spirit Longs for Thee' by John Byrom. Byrom was born in Manchester in 1692 and his name is remembered there. He was a well-educated man, and his poem is cleverly structured as well as being poignant to me.
My spirit longs for thee
Within my troubled breast
Though I unworthy be
Of so divine a guest:
Of so divine a guest
Unworthy though I be
Yet has my heart no rest
Unless it come from thee:
Unless it come from thee
In vain I look around
In all that I can see
No rest is to be found:
No rest is to be found
But in thy blessed love
O let my wish be crowned
And send it from above!
