I saw a novelisation of this in a bookshop today.
I mention this because a) interesting! and b) it might be a way of getting to know the story to help out with this...

The BBC did shoot some scenes, I have a video and book, from memory the video has commentary and story board sketches to fill in the blanks. I seem to recall lots or riding around in bicycles was involved.
