I understand grilled cheese is mostly an american thing
but...
in the uk I have a cooker with what i would call an eye level grill
that is a thing with flames above the cooker at approximately eye level 
with which I do occasionally cook bread to make it toast then put cheese on said toast then put it back under the grill to melt the cheese
