i'm always amazed by the number of people who tell me they have savings accounts with one of the main high street banks - these are notoriously bad at paying interest and you'll be lucky to get more than half a percent of interest out of them. however if you look around you'll find there's plenty of savings accounts out there that offer about 3 to 4% (before tax) eg standard life, egg etc etc
the same applies to credit cards: the major high street banks tend to charge the most interest on the money they lend you, usually around 18%. again, if you look around you'll find plenty of credit cards offering much more attractive rates than that. and as for store cards they generally charge ridculous interest rates of almost 30% so if you have got a store card than tear it up and transfer your balance onto one of the credit cards that offers zero interest on all balance transfers...
