Not sure if I would want to buy food classed as not quite right...I assume you have not had any bad experiences from 'not quite right' food?....In England we have 'reduced' shelves where people with credit cards and black bank balances can make those without feel bad for looking at food/house hold stuff that's only realy fit for the bin.

No the food's fine - it just has to be sold that day so they have to reduce it or throw it away. The only thing I've ever noticed that I wouldn't buy is the mince, which is sometimes not as red as I'd like at that time of the day. Never had any problems health-wise with any reduced food. It's usually a case of if you'd been there ½ an hour earlier it would have cost full price anyway.

But then again that could be from my student days where anything was classed as edible once you'd cut the mold off. Probably have a cast iron stomach now...

Most of the stuff is "not quite right" because the cans are dented or labels are torn. Perishables might be close to the "use by" date or passed the "best before", but meet Health Dept regs and are perfectly safe for consumption.
It's cheap (you can easily save 25% of your grocery bill) but definitely not nasty, and they have carefully cultivated an image of catering to the thrifty rather than the poor.

The fish was best before Jan 2nd but sell by Jan 1st, since the shop wasn't going to be open on Jan 1st and they were closing on Dec31st an hour later the fish was fresh *and* 10p...I've bought things which are closer to the best before date than that and if you where planning to freeze the fish it would have been fine to cut it a little closer.

Probably not ideal for sashimi, though.

I find Aldis lager tastes better than other leading brands.

From my experiences with lager, I find it hard to envisage anything tasting much worse than the "leading brands"...

Ineed to buy a new microwave, old one is a health hazard now. Next on the list is a new video recorder, old one broken. I am looking in all the local supermarkets for a bargain. The cheapest one I have seen so far is £35 in Argos.

Yeah, I think I saw the same one in Lakeside Argos yesterday. If your microwave is that bad, sugggest you get a new one when ur uptown 2morrow Michael. u use it quite a lot, so it's worth u replacing it. I don't think ur likely to get one for less than £35.

I'll be needing a new microwave soon too, so u can test that one out, let me know what it's like, b4 I get the same one

If it goes "bing" that would be a good thing. Microwaves that go "bing" have a lot more character.

You can easily spend lots and lots of money on a microwave and then find the only thing it does different is to give a rather dull and lifeless "beep - beep - beep" rather and a cheerful and friendly "bing".

I agree completely, a microwave without a "bing" is like a telephone which has a "brr, brr" rather than a "ring ring". Not in character at all!

I used to have one of those microwaves... Hint: Always cock your Bing!

If you need to set the timer for less than two minutes, the microwave won't "Bing" unless you crank the timer up to ten minutes or so (to cock the "Bing spring") then back it off to 2 minutes before starting.

On the subject of "Bings", I've been trying for some time to buy a cheap "Bing-Bong" doorbell with a cordless button. I've found plenty where the electronic "Bings" sound acceptable, but none where a single press of the bellpush elicits a single "Bing-Bong". Most seem to make it sound like the person at the door has pressed the button three times; one was four and the best I found so far was a couple which went off twice for each push of the button. What the are the designers thinking of??? If somebody stood ringing my doorbell impatiently and repeatedly I'd probably punch them out when I answered the door; I don't need an electronic device to simulate this sort of rudeness.

It was the first "chirruping" phone introduced by the Post Office (pre-BT! ) and was very popular in the late 1970s. You can still hear the ring in some parts of the UK, as it was assymmilated into the song patterns of the local songbirds and passed down through the generations!

It probably didn't "ring a bell" because I came to live in Spain in the mid-70s.
