A Conversation for Handy Japanese Phrases

Hi,
I have two pen friends in Japan who both write to me in English via email and snailmail. I found your site very interesting as I would love to write a little something to them in Japanese.
The phrases you have given are ideal but can you tell me if they would understand these phrases as written down or are they only for pronouciation in speaking?

Even though the guide is intended for English speakers, most Japanese people can read English characters, and should be able to understand what is written in my guide.
