Is Tamboro the same as Krakatoa? Is Krakatoa another name for the entry on stubbing your toe? smiley - winkeye

Gnomon - time to move on

Tambora is not the same as Krakatoa. The Krakatoa eruption was much louder but a lot less explosive than Tambora.

I think on the list of greatest explosions since civilisation began, Tambora is 1st, Santorini 2nd and Krakatoa 3rd.

Yes, that's right Gnomon - Tambora is east of the island of Java, and Krakatoa is west of Java, and the two eruptions happened about 50 years apart.

Supervolcanoes, now that's a subject in its own right. Fortunately for us they don't happen very often (ie only every 10s of millions of years), so I don't think we need to worry so much. If one were to occur, then we are talking global extinction. It's not much talked about, but a huge supervolcano event occurred 65 million years ago in India (the Deccan Traps) which was sufficient in its own right to cause a large-scale kill-off.

Glad you liked the entry. If you are interested in volcanos and earthquakes and all sorts of natural events, come and take a look at the Living Earth page on A765263 !
