A Conversation for Purple Mashed Potatoes

The two largest colleges in Texas are the Univ. of Texas, whose color is burnt orange, and Texas A&M Univ. whose color is maroon. Of course they are arch rivals in everything, starting with football. Since A&M has a large Agricultural Dept. (the "A"), they figured out how to grow maroon carrots. Part of their global plan to wipe out the color orange, I guess. Next is smiley - oj

That's amazingly cool!

well, I suppose if you're a kansas state univ. or northwestern univ. fan you could tailgate with the purple mashed potatoes.

I went to Univ of Michigan and there are very few Blue foods (but I'm working on it, trust me!).

You've probably heard the George Carlin routine, "Were's all the blue food!?! Blueberries? B.S., they're purple! Who took the blue food?!?!" A great rant. smiley - monster

What I want to know is if the University of Oklahoma plans on growing crimson carrots, because if anyone wanted to wipe out the color orange it would be them. smiley - smiley

I'm going to cheat when I go to U of Mich football games and use food coloring. . .

Still have a few weeks before I figure out how to make Yellow and Blue food for tailgates (Blue Chips? hmm.). Open for suggestions!

They have those blue corn chips and you could mix them with the Doritos brand corn chips (they are very yellow).

There's also blue Jello. Oh and I saw these french fries in the frozen food isle, something like "Wacky Fries" or "Wild Fries" and one of the types was bright blue. They are supposed to taste the same though.

A word of warning however, the strong dye used in the new blue foods that are popping up everywhere does not digest in the human body. It's not bad for you, but is a little suprising later on. Hope you know what I mean, I'd rather not go into detail. smiley - smiley

My brother went to the Univ. of Oklahoma long ago, used to drive down to Dallas (a neutral field?) for the annual brawl. He said all the gas stations had signs, "Welcome Sooners!" but they were painted with orange letters. smiley - erm Some years ago a Sooner player told of an old man - " ... two, maybe three hundred years old ..." - who approached the Sooner team bus and wanted to fight the whole bunch.

P. S. Heinz may have blue ketchup by now, they started out with green and then sort of a bubble gum purple, I think ... think I'll stick with smiley - hotdog

Thanks for the warning melanie, and thanks even more for NOT going into detail.

I don't doubt the fighting Sooner story. As a Sooner, I have witnessed things I am not proud of. The annual brawl at Texas is the best/worst show of team pride known to mankind.

Yes, sports does bring out some less than admirable instincts in fans. But just to clarify, the old guy who wanted to fight the entire team on the bus was a Longhorn fan (as told - somewhat admiringly - by a Sooner player). The old Sooners were probably trying to pick a fight at some other bus. smiley - biggrin

That's a good article, none of the Texas press mentioned that during the Aggie "maroon carrot" story. So the Aggies are just "restoring" carrots to their original color? NOT smiley - magic

it's not just carrots either, cauliflower too was originally purple. A local supermarket had them in recently and although I like purple veg, you know beetroot, aubergine, whatever, the cauli looked too weird by half.

Yup, purple cauliflower would be strange, and I love cauliflower. "Red" cabbage (really sort of purple?) on the other hand, is a favorite, especially raw in salad.
