If you're in the north of England you could do worse than to take a look at these two walled towns of Roman origin. Both are full of historical, archetectural and cultural delights...and the locals are unlikely to lynch you so long as you behave yourself...

I couldn't agree more. It's a couple of years since I've been to York, but I live near Chester. Chester's got modern shops in the middle of Roman and Medieval buildings. The Roodee Race Course is the smallest in the UK and the the place to be at the big meeting in earlier June. The fresh produce (Cheshire cheese, other dairy and meat) in the Market behind the Town Hall is superb, and the Old Refectory in St. Werbergh's Cathedral is the place for a light lunch. The zoo is huge with all kinds exotica and the best in the UK by far. "The Albion" is recommended for good beer and a traditional lunch, and it is deliberately *not* family friendly! Snowdonia, North Wales and those superb castles built to suppress the Welsh are a quick sprint up the A55 expressway.
If you're thinking a of weekend break, travel in on the park and rides as there's no room in the City Centre for parking.
PS Don't forget Michael Owen is the local hero.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
