A Conversation for Citybreaks

Krakow, Poland

I have been here for 6 weeks on an Internship and I really love this city now. It's worth going there for a weekend, too, although you are not able to see all of it.

The main thing to see is the city center. There is the "Rynek Glowny", which is supposed to be a old cloth hall. If you're searching for souvenirs, it's the best place gettting them smiley - smiley

"Rynek Glowny" is surrounded by a huge square, the market square. It is one of the largest in europe and has a size of about 40000 squaremeters.
You will see "Holy Mary's church", which is easy to recognize as it has two different towers! From one of them, every hour a guard sounds a trumpet (notice that the play cuts of suddenly as the legend says he was shot by an arrow of an enemy while warning the ciry of an attack)
on the square, there is also the "City Hall Tower" on the square. As the name says, it's the only thing remainig from the city hall.

West of the market square you will find the Tourist Information and "Florianska street", where you can buy clothes and food.

East of the market square (about 500m to go) there is Wawel hill. On top, there was the residence of Polands first king, Boleslaus the brave. Later, a Cathedral was built there, too. It's also nice visiting the graves of the kings and the cave of the dragon.
As Wawel hill is situated near the Wisla river, you can follow it soutwards and come to Kazimierz, the old jewish quarter, where there are some churches to see, too.

A nice thing to see is the Wielizka Saltmine, 10km east of Krakow and easily reachable by minibus from the station. It is a very huge mine with about 300km of ways driven into the ground.

Nightlife: I just recommend going to the city center at night. There are so many pubs, discos, restaurants, so I really would just suggest trying a few of them.
Many are located in the basement and have a nice atmosphere.
If you can't decide, go to "Pod Jaszczurami " at the north of market square (a students pub with nice atmosphere and good music) or "Carpe Diem" at Florianska Street.

Also worth mentioning is that Auschwitz is very close to Krakow, only
about 1,5 hour bus trip away. Easiest (and cheapest AFAIK) way to get
there is going by bus, either from bus station ( cheapest but slower )
or from the other side of the railway station ( that is, not the side
where the market square and bus station is ). If you decide to take the "normal"
bus from the bus station, remember that your destination is in polish Oswiecim.

ps. admittedly visiting a concentration camp is not everybodys idea of a nice
relaxing weekend. smiley - biggrin

There are many more attractions to Krakow than mentioned here! The mounds, Ojcow, kazimierz, podgorze. Ever time I go to Krakow I discover more. http://www.cracow-life.com is one of the best guides i've found to Krakow Poland, and a good way to source new treasures. I hope it helps you make the most of this crazy, amazing city...
