Dunno about Manchester but the Union Rooms, J.D Wetherspoons in Newcastle upon Tyne is on 3 floors of a building in the style of a French Chateau. Definitely worth a visit, though so of the staff leave a lot to be desired

A French Chateau in Newcastle? I have just developed a mental image of the Toon Army waving hankerchiefs, drinking wine and eating langustine. Possibly even while smaoking Gauloises and saying "Haw he haw". smiley - silly

Can vouch that Moon Under Water in Manchester is big. I didn't realise that it holds 1800! It used to be cinema - an old style one with plush velvet and grand staircases to the balcony. I think it was the ABC and I actually saw a film there about 23 years ago. It gets very full of students as its cheap. The food's pretty good too. It's a pretty good place to start your night out as it's at the end of Deansgate - a major road through the middle of town with bars and various different quarters all within walking distance.
