"Corked wine is the reason for the little ritual in restaurants, where one person is asked to taste the wine."
I recall a colleague of mine as he recounted a visiit with his wife to the local F.E. College where they had dinner in the 'Training Restaurant'.
Having ordered there wine, the 'waiter' (student) uncorked the bottle and asked, 'Would Sir like to sniff the cork?'

Yes, people who are in the know can just sniff the cork rather than tasting the wine. That's all that's needed to know if the wine is "corked".
