A Conversation for The Structures in Our Lives
Inner conflict/tensions

I am training to be a counsellor, and found your entry of particular interest, as part of what I am being taught is based on problem solving and have often thought that where problem solving has its uses, whilst dealing with personal beliefs about yourself it has little use.
I have learnt from my own experience that trying to change beliefs about yourself often causes an inner conflict, or tensions, and have been trying to find conformation on this, which your article has done. This is really a complex area, and difficult to explain which I thought you done rather well. I will also pose the question of; if one becomes aware of ones own personal beliefs about oneself, can one change it?
Whilst trying to change negative personal beliefs, I used positive thought, what I found is that my beliefs about myself are emotional and because the emotional feelings I have about myself, come from my own personal belief system and stem back to when I was a child, they are strong feelings and very deep rooted; some I have only become aware of recently. The result of this, my conscious thoughts were contradicting my inner feelings about myself; this led to what I refer to as inner conflict. When you think about it when trying to change your own personal belief system you are actually calling your self a lair and inwardly arguing with yourself!!

Hello, Timeagain

It all depends what those beliefs are, and how well founded, and why you wish to change them, and what you would like to change them to!
