A minor character that overlapped between two series was Reg Barclay, played by Dwight Schultz. He appeared occassionally in The Next Generation as a very anxious engineer who would "lose" himself in fantasy worlds on the holodecks and also appeared towards the end of the Voyager series after making contact with Voyager via a wormhole,I believe. He also had a small part in the film S.T:First Contact where he managed to shake hands with Zephram Cochrane.
Footnote:Dwight Schultz may be otherwise be remembered as "Howling Mad" Murdoch in The A Team.

It's not a wormhole, it's using the Midas Array to send a subspace message (whilst obtaining the extra energy required via a pulsar).
