A Conversation for 'The Wizard of Oz' - the Silent Film

"O, Brother ..."

"They land, none too gently, in Oz, and are met by Kruel and a phalanx of troops. "

I haven't seen the silent film(s), but I recently rented the later movie to check out my wife's contention that the Ku Klux Klan choreography and chant in "O, Brother Where Art Thou" is basically the same as the soldiers around the castle in "Wizard of Oz". Complete with the three heroes looking in, the theft of costumes, etc. Sure enough. The above quote makes me think this concept may go back even further.

I'm not sure about that, though it might bear looking into. The army in the silent film is fairly uninteresting; in the musical play the soldiers were all chorines, which allowed for a dance number.
