This is a lovely article and I knew none of it before I read it here smiley - ok

Just one or two little editorial quibbles.

'Though this alteration and even distortion of the story might seem barbarous today, when The Wizard is adored by so many, the stage show was a tremendous success, and very positively received, even drawing admiration from Baum...'
This sentence is mixing tenses and is a bit confusing smiley - erm

'and Hardy as 'Babe', which is his real-life nickname...'
Surely *was* unless Oliver Hardy is still alive and about 120 unbeknownst to me smiley - winkeye

Other than that though - interesting stuff, what will h2g2 come up with next? smiley - bigeyes

smiley - cheers

Oops, got my tenses scrambled. I'll try not to get tense about it. Perhaps this is due to some warping of the timeframe?
I would argue the point in reference to Babe Hardy. Babe is his nickname, even though he is dead. Babe no longer lives, but the relationship of name to man still exists. Or am I turning Sophist on you?
Regardless, I'm glad there weren't more errors than those.

There have been videos of Larry Semon's Wizard film and L. Frank Baum's Oz films available, and they may even be on DVD by now. Baum's films have a naive charm that is quite enjoyable; Semon's film is dreadful.
