Although the song is definitely about Buddy Holly, the plane was not called "American Pie", rather being known by the catchier name of "N3794N". Sorry to be picky, but I'm afraid you've fallen for an urban myth.

Love the new lyrics, everyone. Making me chortle lots.
If nothing else, the new lyric would knock the scan of the line way out, giving it a completely new rhythm. As if the song doesn't go on forever anyway
