Actually, they're not that bad to work on. Not even the considerably more complicated XM that you mention is too bad.
Just keep the hydraulic filters clean, and change the hydraulic oil every 12,000 - 18,000 miles to keep them sweet.
Servicing is really really important on these old tanks. Most other cars can run reasonably for years with no servicing but it doesn't do them any good. Citroens just keel over and die if you don't look after them.

Well, "looking after them" does involve a certain amount of picking it up after it's keeled over...
Get an XM, then you can do voodoo chicken-waving to diagnose the electronic faults.
