I wonder if melted butter applied to toast with a brush would have the same effect? I'll have to give it a try.

I tried using cold margarine, the kind that comes in a tub; I spread it in thin lines with a knife and then toasted it in the oven and it worked great. Zebra stripes on toast are very cool.

What about melting the margarine in a microwave... then using the brush technique... how does that work? (I don't have any margarine at my home to try this with)

I found that cold water works best and doesn't flavour (or fry) the toast.
