Edison did invent an electric light but was beaten to it by Sir Joseph Swan of Sunderland , England by about a year. There was a long court case about patent rights which Swan won. Later Edison and Swan teamed up and created the Ediswan company. This was still going in the 60s when it was purchased by AEI.
