This is a great article!
Maybe Michelangelo was just saying that
God is very brainy? The mastermind behind the
creation of the universe?
Subliminal messages are not unknown, of course.
A picture of a plate of fried clams *could*
have a hidden sexual or phallic design that
the subconscious mind picks up even if the
conscious mind doesn't. (cf "The Clam-Plate
Orgy") But people of Michelangelo's day would
likely not have ever seen a human brain.
So, who would have been Michelangelo's intended
audience for this? Not very many people try to
send messages to posterity in the hope that
someone in a future era will have the depth
of knowledge necessary to interpret them.
(Okay, so Houdini did promise to send a message
from beyond the grave, but that was a trick
that was soon found out.)
