I am intrigued tunnels were chosen over bridges. Is the river still navigable for seatrade here?

Yes, it is. I'm not sure how much traffic goes through, but ships do go up to Thames. Tower Bridge has to be raised a few times a week to let them through, they've already passed under the QEII bridge.
