I really enjoyed this entry. Thanks. Now I have a general question about Roman settlements: who owns the land? Does ownership remain with the empire and tenants lease it? And, who owns the buildings? Was the philosophy about settlements one of, "If you build it, they will come?" Just wondering.

very much!
I'm not really sure, but I think it was mostly privately owned, though people may have had to buy it from the Empire in the first place.
Really good questions, I wish I knew the answer.

Ah well, you know that asking questions, to paraphrase Mark Twain, is better than answering them because you get credit for knowledge that you don't have - plus it's easier and doesn't cost anything.

Very interesting article indeed. I'd love to be able to reproduce it on a history-dedicated site called the History Files (at kessler-web.co.uk), with your permission.
This feature relates directly to my favourite period, sub-Roman Britain, so it would be great to be able to include it.
Best wishes
Peter

I don't understand. That site is for a company, surely. Is it based in St Albans or something?
