...if we could all live in such an idyllic world where such systems were even remotely possible. the idealist in me would love to see a society in which there was no want or need, but, unfortunately, the cynical pragmatist in me knows that it is, indeed, only a dream.

Yes it would be nice.
But onto more serious matters... You are right that at the moment the human race is not ready to cope with this kind of society, not that the continuation of our social system is helping in any way. However we need to start preparing ourselves for the future, and the first thing to overcome is the idea, not that we are not ready, but the idea that we will never be ready.
