This recipe can make very salty onions!

The author suggests leaving the onions in the brine for at least 24 hours.... I'd suggest probably not a lot more than that either.
I made the mistake of forgetting mine, and they were in the brine for two to three days. Unfortunately that makes unpalatable, very salted, pickled onions.
Just a warning so you don't have wasted efforts.

I do stress that you should rinse the onions well - that way you should never end up with salty onions. I, too, have sometimes left them in brine for two or three days, but putting them in a colander and rinsing well under cold running water ensures any residue salt is removed.
