I seem to remember that when his girlfriend committed suicide, nobody came forward to claim the body, so Giger claimed it himself. He then used carpet beetles to strip the flesh from the skeleton, and had the skeleton mounted in his studio.
This may, of course, be apocryphal, but I seem to remember it being quoted round about the time Alien was made.
