I recently read an amazing account of a German's travels through Tibet in WW2 - "Seven Years in Tibet" made into a film starring Brad Pitt. The book is much better! The author has a website and some beautiful and moving 40's and 50's photos of Tibet: http://www.harrerportfolio.com

Hi there. thanks for the comments. You're right about the book being more interesting than the film, which glosses over a lot of material. I found it interesting that Peter Aufschneiter actually contributed a lot more than he is given credit for in the film. We shouldn't ask too much of the movies, I guess. Still, it's remarkable how many people only know about Tibet because of the Brad Pitt film.

You may care to take a look at Tibet on Film (A668793), another bit of my Tibet project (A643862). If you haven't already seen it, look out for Kundun, a film which essentially tells of the same events as Seven Years In Tibet from the perspective of the young Dalai Lama.

Hello John; have you come across Chaiwallah (Researcher U219914) who is a main organiser of Tibet Support Ireland? Many a merry jape he has led me on, with such success that the high-level Chinese delegation visiting Ireland a few years back left saying in their farewell speeches "You would think from our experiences here that there is nothing to China but human rights and Tibet" or words to that effect.

I hope Chaiwallah replied, "... and human rights are in short supply!" Chaiwallah did pop by some time ago. He seems a good bloke. I've been meaning to try his massala chai recipe.
