h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Great article, you seem to be a bit unenthusiastic about the last two albums though. The first two albums have a raw power about them that gives them a really massive impact that is just like...boom...in your face, but I think its worth remembering the later albums as great examples of a band trying a different type of angle to their music. They both maintain that unique Pixies sound, but also have a refined elegance and, well, almost Beach Boys type falvour at times...although..in that Pixies way...a very interesting concept when you think about it in detail.
Bossa Nova has some fantastic songs on it, 'Velouria' being one, with an immense guitar hook and a formidable rhythmic energy it really surges forward, well punctuated by Black Francis' unusual let amazingly emotive voice.
Trompe Le Monde on the other hand has such memorable songs as 'Letter to Memphis' and 'Alec Eiffel'. And we musn't ignore the fantastically striding riff of 'U-Mass'.

The jukebox in Jim's Bar in the QM (my local) usually has a very good selection on it but for some reason has committed the awful heresy of never having the Pixies on it. This month they're adding "Death to the Pixies" finally. Now I can scream along to "Tame" or sway in style to "Where is my mind?" with a pint in one hand. I'm a happy bunny.

Great article by the way. Although I do have to agree with Jed that Veloria is a magnificent song and U-Mass also kicks ass. You may wish to mention that Kurt Cobain thought that all of Nevermind may just be seen as a poor Pixies pastiche and that "...teen spirit" sounded too much like "Gouge Away." Also that "Tame" featured in the Smirnoff advert and "Where is my mind?" was the end theme of "Fight Club."
The Pixies are one of my favourite bands. If only for the ridiculously silly "Tony's Theme."

I guess it's just one of those things - entries about bands are always going to be written from a subjective angle. Ignoring individual songs I still think the first two LPs kick ass far more than the last two or three on the whole, where Gil Norton gave them a far more polished sound. Velouria's a cool song - dead catchy, but it's not what springs to mind when I think of Pixies. Missing out a reference to U-Mass was definitely an oversight though, as it's one of their finest songs - the anticipation of waiting for the bass to kick in makes it really exciting to listen to.

Unfortunately the time for adding these things was during the entry's time in Peer Review. I'll try suggesting some stuff in the Updates section, but I wouldn't hold your breaths. In my defence let me just say that I'm one of the few people who haven't seen Fight Club, despite (or perhaps because of) the constant urging of people I know who have seen it.
