Can't say I've ever heard it called that. It was just the mototr and dynamo rules to us. Don't suppose you know which Fleming you are thinking of?

Now it's mentioned, I remember it being called 'flemmings rule' as well, can't remember which hand though

It's not important in it's own right but it is an interesting approach to figuring out the cross product of orthogonal vector quantities and that is, of course, an essential life skill. Or is that just me?

not something I use on a regular basis but I'm more into costumes/fabric than electronics/magnatism these days. Mind you, if someone were to invent a rule to make lacing a corset easier

I'm not sure! I got myself in a right muddle the other day its having the tensioning thingy in the right place that's the tricky bit!
