Red Sky in the Morning

The rule also holds good in the deserts of the American southwest.
A blood red sky in the morning means a wrath-of-God class storm within the day.
There's a classic of Western art depicting a cowboy leading his horse to higher ground under a blood red sky, against the impending storm and flash floods, title, if I'm not mistaken, "Cowboy Take Warning".
Its hard to credit the sky could be a color like that till one has actually seen it.

This is close, but redder.

A very, very old saying as I remember it goes:
Red in the morning, sailor takes warning.
Red at night, sailor's delight.
