A Conversation for The Isle of Thanet, Kent, UK

Don't forget Lord Upminster

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

There's that line in Ian Dury's song 'Billericay Dickie'...
"I'd rendezvous wiv Janet, quite near the Isle of Fanet"

And in the book '1066 and All That', all that anyone who wanted to conquer England had to do was land at the Isle...
"Julius Caesar landed, like all other successful invaders of these islands, at Thanet"
"...Angles, Saxons, and Jutes who, landing at Thanet, soon overran the country..."
"The conversion of England was thus effected by the landing of St Augustine in Thanet and other places..."
"... led by such memorable warriors as Harold Falsetooth and Magnus The Great, who, landing correctly in Thanet, overran the country from right to left..."

Felonious Monk - h2g2s very own Bogeyman

The best book I ever read, 'Riddley Walker' by Russell Hoban, has the Isle of Thanet depicted in the far future as a true island again and called 'The Ram'. Dungeness, meanwhile, is also shown as an island, and referred to as Dunk Yer Arse. Was Dungeness ever an island too?

Thank you Gosho, I think I covered the Romans, Saxon & St Augustine - didn't explicitly mention the Vikings (except for the Ship)! However, it was very remiss of me to forget the late, great Ian Dury's (Lord Upminster?!?)promotion of the place - sorry. TGO

Thank you Felonius Monk. I've never read that author - I guess I will now!! Dungeness, an island?? Well it's a shingle headland & a high point - so it's possible. TGO
