, a very intersting read.
Two additions, if allowed.
You can roughly translate "Salzkammergut" as "Salt chamber (cavern) county" - there´s a beautiful region of Austria with that name, and guess what their main export was, so we are back to the Celts.
"Grubenhund" - "Grube" is "pit", but it also translates as "mine", and a "Hund" is a hand drawn plank on small wheels, very close to the ground. So a "Grubenhund" is something you can use to transport heavy loads in a low tunnel.

Thanks for that Pit - do you think the translations should go in as footnotes?
It's nice to know that your entries have been read - so thanks for commenting!

Hmmm...you know about translations. In both cases they aren´t by a tourist guide but by older/local/job specific German. I´ll stand by you, though, if you get any flak for inserting.
Mind - when the shots come in...I never said I´ll stand in front of you.

I'd like to correct that.
The word 'Salzkammergut' comes from 'Kammergut', a part of the country that was owned directly by the Emperor. 'Kammer' in this case is not 'cave/chamber/room' but 'chamber' as a unit of administration.

Viele Panzer (many tanks) for that correction. You Austrians have funny words for pretty good things anyway - a pimpf shouldn´t try to translate the menu, just ask the oberkellner to bring the best.
