A resident of Sydney for the last twenty plus years, I have probably travelled more on the Manly Ferry more than the one across the Mersey. While Paul Kelly may have done a good job describing the Manly Ferry, as the son of a scouser (although she would never have described herself as such), who holidayed in my Mother's fair city on many a summer, I have "ferried 'cross the Mersey" more than once, and cannot hear the song sung, or even spoken of, without singing along (in my mind at least, to the great relief of all around, I'm sure).
The images in my head are in black and white, whether because that's the way the mind works or because music "videos" of the day were not yet in colour (at least not on our T.V.) I don't know, but the vision is always watery, and that has nothing to do with the river.

I've seen Jerry a few times int he early 90s when there used to be a 60s concert in Essex. They used to put him on last,
you could watch his set, leave the field on the 3rd encore of 'ferry', then by the 6th rendition of 'you'll never walk alone' your car will almost be out the car park !!

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
