I used to live in Badminton the village in what is now South Glocestershire and so I was interested to read the aticle on this site.
Regarding the history of the game as far as I heard the story it was brought over from India by the army officers and was played with rackets made of dear hide, (There are dear in the park on the estate).
The size of the court is taken from the reception hall and I belive the tram lines are the width of the mantle peice over the fireplace. I'm not sure about the wanting to play tennis indoors it may have been easier and more seemly for women to play this game in the dresses of the day.
Boris.
