A Conversation for John Creasey and the Toff

The Toff and the Dead Man's Finger

I was lucky enough to aquire a copy of this very rare title recently so will not spoil the plot for those who haven't read it! This book was started by Creasey and finished by Wiliam Vivian Butler after his death. Butler also wrote some Gideons.

I don't think Butler read many of the Toff books - if he did he only read the earlier ones as the characterisations seem stuck in a time warp with the Toff freely using a gun as well as his knife which didn't happen so much in the later adventures - Creasey managed to get a tiny bit politically correct in later years!! In a way I suppose the book goes back to the start and thus finishes the series rather well.

Having said all that it is a jolly good book and will be enjoyed by all Creasy and Toff fans - if only more copies were available.......

Thanks for this. I keep reading as many of Dad's books as I can. I read the Whithered Man trilogy last week and am about to listen to a new audio tape of Beauty for Inspector West. But I haven't got round to The Toff and the Dead Man's Finger. I should. Best and thanks again Richard

Hello Richard

What a shame that tethered camel folded - I collected all the new editions and was really hoping they would get round to re-publishing some of the rarer titles , at least I did get Introducing the Toff to read without fear of damaging my original very fragile copy. Still hoping for a tv adaptation.
