Engineering eats itself

I think there will be many people in engineering who can relate to this story, even if they haven't worked for any of the companies you name explicitly. I left telecoms (POTS) in 1988, having worked for STC and then STC/ICL, but none of the other companies I've worked for, except for Smiths Industries, who I think I was officially employed by for about two weeks, survive. All have fallen apart, merged, been taken over and depopulated, or similar. Centres of expertise get destroyed, sometimes even before the knowledge is obselete. It is a fascinating process.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
