Dmitri Mendeleev is the person credited with the creation of the Periodic Table of the Elements.
This year is the 100th Anniversary of his death, so I thought it appropriate to Update Hell's Entry on Mendeleev.

I've sent Hell an email asking if he minds if I update it, and I'm awaiting a reply. I don't anticipate any problems as we've previouslyt discussed me massaging another of his (unedited) Entries with as view to getting it into the Guide.

However, if he objects, I'll with draw it. He hasn't posted for over a fortnight, though. I've submitted it early because there seems to be a current paucity of Entries in PR.
It differs from Hell's original Entry merely in the addition of an extra section about the Periodic Table, plus a few more links.

Good job, Al, and sorry you haven't had any comments so far. I think the update looks excellent and reads well, but we should give others a couple more days to comment before we proceed with updating the original. Hopefully this post should a few more people in

I noticed two minor tweaks you need to make:

'dated March 1, 1866 contains the following Minute:

Professor G.F. FOSTER humorously inquired of Mr. Newlands...'

The date should be 1 March, 1866 and you should remove the full stops from GF Forster and Mr Newlands for correct h2g2 house style.

I found the constant use of the full name, Dmitri Mendeleev, especially in the first half of the entry, a bit tedious. It would read better if the entry started with: 'Dmitri Mendeleev was a Russian chemist...' and thereafter just used Mendeleev, as it does later on.

which burnt down in 1848 --> but that burnt down in 1848,

just right after he was accepted into university --> leave out the 'right'

<> If your dates are correct, he was actually only 72 at his death (just!)

that there were no elements yet to be discovered --> leave out the 'yet' as the next sentence starts with another one

fill a gap between silicon and tin --> fill *the* gap between silicon and tin

8 elements --> eight elements
