"BDSM (Bondage and Discipline / Domination and Submission)" seems to imply that "SM" is short for "Domination and Submission". "Sadomasochism" is probably the word you're looking for.

The footnote says "-gerg" instead of "-berg".

Nice. smiley - smiley I see you kept the Dominance/submission as an explanatory alternative to Bondage/Discipline. I don't know if I think it's informative or just messy... smiley - erm Maybe Fragilis has an opinion?

Thanks for the swami routine, Ashley. smiley - smiley

Well, there's no single or clear way to spell out BDSM. All the words Ashley's used are appropriate and are used by some people. I think if folks want more information about what BDSM means, they can follow the link provided.

So I guess I like it fine. smiley - smiley

Strange, I thought BD was Bondage and Dominance (it is, according to Babylon, that also claims it's Australian slang) and SM was sadomasochism. Put 'em together... smiley - erm

Anyway, if you like it, it's fine. It's your Entry after all. smiley - smiley

I'm not really here

A bit late in here, but I always use those terms to describe BDSM too. 6 words shortened to 4 letters seems very efficient, and covers most kinks. smiley - winkeye

I came to say well done for the entry Frag. smiley - smiley I'd heard of the film, but hadn't thought anything of it before I read this. Then I knew I had to! I've finally managed to see it and it's a great film and a great entry.smiley - biggrin Thanks very much.

Great job on a great flick. I wonder, however, why you found it difficult to discuss the dolls' (with metal teeth) representation of rebellious children, or women inhaling from hookahs (that lead to transparent vats containing floating men) representing corrupt laziness.

The melodrama with which most adults complain of children who seem ungrateful or greedy often generates talk of pain, suffering, slowly being bled, etc. The needs of the children are seen as a 'bound' duty, and the assault is multi-directional and persistent. (Thank God mine's a bit better than this)

The women, it seems to say, are those who derive their sustenance and pleasure from drawing energy and life from (or otherwise abusing) men who are unable to avoid their societally proscribed role of provider. This may have been a stab at stay-at-home wives who have no responsibilities; either no kids or home duties, or those having servants to take care of them. (Not to be confused with those who do take care of the kids, home, and a hundred other things.)

Overall, I was highly satisfied with the article and your observations. Again, great job.

Good job, Fords Towel. I suppose I could have gone into the whole song and dance, but I wanted to keep the article down to a reasonable length. And there are so many interesting props used in the movie to make various points that one could go on for a very long time indeed.

It's great to see someone taking the time to add a little explanation in for anybody interested enough to check the conversations out. And I daresay you did a better job of being succinct than I could have done!

And thanks for the compliments, but take one for yourself too. smiley - ok

Thanks much, Frag, for the appreciative reply! Someday I'll learn how to better emote my appreciation (once I learn how to use the smiley graphics).

I fully understand about trying to keep the size in check. I hope I do as well on my first (or thirtieth) entry.

I'm just glad I remember the film well enough to discuss it a bit; but, frankly, you saw a lot more in there than I took the time to look for back when. I mostly assimilated it as a romp. I rarely think to look for the social commentary in what appears to be light comedy.

You'd think that film appreciation class would have taught me better.
